Welcome to Education Sub branch

Unison Glasgow Education Sub-Branch represents virtually every type of employee working in Education Services except teachers. Carol ball is the “Convener” (Chairperson),  the Vice-Convener is Avril Brady and the Secretary is Ian McCracken.  They co-ordinate a committee made up of stewards representing the many diverse staff who work in Education Services. If a member has any issues, it should always be a steward that they contact in the first place. Stewards are the “frontline” contacts for members.

Stewards have responsibility both for members from their own sector (for example, Ian McCracken is a librarian and therefore represents librarians’ issues), but he is also a named contact for a specific area of the city.) In the same way, everyone on the Committee is also the first point of contact for members within a particular geographic area. (The Branch Office 552-7069 should be able to advise you who is the appropriate steward to contact. )

Stewards are elected annually (in November of each year). Each month the Education Committee - comprising all these stewards, and the Convener, Vice-Convener and Secretary - will meet to discuss a wide ranging issue affecting members in all the different sectors of Education, and based throughout Glasgow (and at other locations such as the Outdoor centre at Blairvadach. )

Each meeting will include reports from stewards representing the different sectors, so that common issues can be identified and tackled in a co-ordinated manner, and also so that good practice and ideas can be shared. If members have raised issues with stewards that the latter feel need to be brought to wider attention, it is at committee meetings that this would happen.

In addition, time is always devoted to wider issues that potentially affect everyone – for example, Pay Claims, health and safety and recently the Workforce Pay and Benefits Review.  Changes that may have been introduced without consultation and which may have impact on members’ working lives are always a very important part of the agenda, and the Committee will strive to address such issues by a variety of means at its disposal. This may be through a local steward, or through reference to standing agreements, or by referring the matter to a number of specialised committees or groups within Unison.

For example, there is a Joint Trade Union Group that meets regularly with senior representatives from Education Services, and some matters may be referred to this body for discussion or action as appropriate.

All stewards (including the convener, vice-convener and secretary) are unpaid volunteers. All are granted varying amounts of  “facility time” by the Council. Facility time is to enable steward to discuss issues with members, make reports, seek members’ views on issues of concern and so on.

Enquiries from members about stewards’ roles and how to become a steward are always welcome. Stewards would be united in agreeing that their work is both challenging and stimulating. Anyone who has become a steward soon finds that they learn and develop a whole range of skills that are valuable not just in their capacity as stewards, but in all aspects of their lives.
