Support Culture and Sport Strikers

Workers in Culture and Sport Glasgow are involved in strike action in a dispute over a wage cut of up to 10% for over 150 workers, a pay freeze for all other workers and cuts in public holidays and overtime rates. The trade unions have attempted through negotiations to persuade CSG not carry out these attacks.  However workers have been left with no option other than to use strike action in an effort to defend their pay and conditions. Our members provide culture and sport services across Glasgow and recognise the wide disruption that strike action will cause.

Yes to fair pay and respect for workers!!

Please support us by sending protest e-mails to Bridget McConnell, CSG Chief Executive at info@csglasgow.org and to Glasgow City Councillor George Redmond, Chair CSG Board at george.redmond@councillors.glasgow.gov.uk. Messages of support to the strikers should be sent to enquiries@glasgowcityunison.co.uk or to the UNISON Branch, 18 Albion Street, G1 1LH

Response to June 22nd Budget Statement

The newly elected Tory/ Lib dem coalition is wasting no time in announcing attacks on public sector spending and its our jobs and the vital services that we provide that are due for the axe!

This financial crisis is not of our making and is the biggest con trick for years – use public money to bail out the banks then bankers and politicians announce that the public sector must pay with cuts in jobs and services.

We reject the government and media campaign that places the blame for the crisis at the door of public sector workers/ public sector services.

We reject the idea ‘private good/ public bad’.

We need a united campaign of service providers and service users to fight cuts described as “worse than during Thatcher’s time”.

Prepare for the fight of our lives!

Public Sector targeted in ‘Millionaires’ Budget

  • Retirement age up
  • Departmental budgets cut by 25%
  • VAT Increase to 20%
  • Child Benefit frozen for three years
  • Pay Freeze for public sector (in Scotland – a three year pay cut)

Result = Double dip recession and Mass Unemployment.

Job Cut Estimates: 610, 000 public sector jobs lost over next six years

Source: Office of Budget Responsibility/ BBC News website 30.6.2010

"The workforce in Glasgow would want to ask the council leader Gordon Matheson 'what are you going to do to protect services? Stand up to the government. Don't cut services.”

Branch Secretary, Brian Smith told Radio Scotland

Hands off Stow College!

75 years of excellence under threat at the hands of the funding council!

Over 300 jobs, over 4,000 student places and 75 years of education are under threat after the latest decision by the Funding Council to transfer courses from Stow to try to justify the proposed new City of Glasgow College.

During the recession, with demand for places outstripping supply, the Funding Council propose to waste over £300m on bricks and mortar on a costly, needless development while refusing to guarantee the future of Stow College.

UNISON believe this is because Stow refused to become involved in the 'New City College' project which has already cost countless £millions, 19 jobs and 54 childcare places with the pending closure of the Thistle Nursery at Nautical College.

UNISON believe that the Funding Council is ignoring experts in the sector who are against its proposals to reshape the curriculum in the city centre of Glasgow and is also engaged in a vindictive campaign against Stow, its staff and its students.

The Funding Council has informed Stow that next years funding is dependent on them signing up for these unacceptable proposals which will endanger its existence, the jobs of its staff and student places.
